It seemed like a good idea...

Spent a mother son day with J today. We went on a long drive to pick up some furniture I had bought online. When I bid I envisaged a family trip including a swim in the sea on the way back, but instead it was storm conditions. Forgot how interesting my son is when I actually listen to him, rather than nag/cajole him! Letting hubby catch up with the clearing out effort, he is slowly getting in the mood. Have started looking at business that offer storage options to add to my business information. Want to be able to offer stylish storage solutions, not just the plastic box! Recycled a coffee table, computer chair and printer and shredded 8 bags of old business papers this week so the house is looking a bit clearer every day. On the other side, have bought some outdoor furniture for our deck and will be shopping for some more kitchen equipment at a local big sale next week, but I will have measured and be shopping with a list this time!

why I'm decluttering

Decluttering going well but I'm stuck in that middle stage - the one where you have pulled everything out and sorted it but there is more rearranging before things can go back to their new home. We still seem to have an excess of stuff in our house - a result of households merging and inheritance. Probably should have stood at the front entrance and directed most of it away but its hard to let go of things that contain memories. Slowly letting go as I realise I will still have the memories even if I don't keep the XXX. Figured that I can't tell others what to do if I haven't implemented it sucessfully in my own life.

This is the first time I have had time to be house proud. I think last time the house looked good was before R came over on a date 9 years ago! Since then we have just accumulated stuff and done repairs. All good structural stuff but not design. Decided that I am too old to be living with student days stuff. That we deserve better - and it doesn't have to be designer expensive, just beautiful and fit for use.

Have realised with trade me that there is lots of furniture out there that isn't that expensive if we don't want new. Also realised that a lot of the things we hold on to are not that much of a treasure and someone else would be better off using them rather than them being in our space.

Away now to sort out the junk drawers - we had 7 drawers of things that need to reduce to 2. Have done 4, 3 to go.

Starting

Feels like a first day today. First day of school, first day of holidays, first day of work - or my new life starting. J at holiday programme, R at work and F asleep in bed. F now two months old and sleeping well so I am starting to feel like I am up to new adventures. Because that is what life is about - if you are not having fun then its all wrong or you need your meds adjusted! Hoping to start a new business soon, but want to make the most of our small house. Fell like now for the first time I not only have the time but energy to have the house I want - not the house full of stuff I inherited that doesn't go with much but is too good to throw out!

Decided step one is decluttering. Drawer by drawer, room by room. But watch as the bags of rubbish go!
